Traditional healthcare in Ethiopia draws on knowledge of medicinal plants, preparation techniques, spiritual practices, massage, birth-related care, and the experience of traditional healers. Practices vary considerably between communities and regions.

Knowledge is often transmitted orally, through apprenticeship, and through family traditions. Some healers specialize in particular plants or conditions, while others combine practical remedies with cultural or spiritual approaches to wellbeing.

A systematic review published in 2024 identified 525 medicinal plant species reported across 59 eligible Ethiopian ethnobotanical studies covering literature from 2010 to 2022. This illustrates the breadth of documented plant knowledge, though it does not mean every remedy has been scientifically validated.

Traditional medicine has several important dimensions:

  • Ethnobotanical knowledge: Recognizing plants and knowing which parts are traditionally used, when they are collected, and how they are prepared.
  • Community care: Families and trusted practitioners provide support informed by local experience and cultural expectations.
  • Livestock healthcare: Ethnoveterinary practices use knowledge of plants, animal behaviour, and symptoms to help manage livestock ailments.
  • Knowledge preservation: Recording local plant names, preparation methods, and practitioners' knowledge can support research and conservation, provided communities give informed consent.

Influence today: Traditional plant knowledge can contribute to ethnobotanical research, pharmaceutical discovery, conservation, and culturally appropriate healthcare. However, traditional use alone does not establish that a remedy is safe or effective. Some plants are toxic, and herbal products can interact with medicines. Scientific testing and appropriate clinical care remain important, especially for serious illnesses.
