Tiya: Ancient stone monuments and archaeological heritage
Description
Tiya is an important archaeological site south of Addis Ababa, known for its standing stone monuments and mysterious carved symbols.
The site contains 36 monuments, including 32 carved stelae. Some display sword-like motifs and other symbols whose full meanings remain uncertain. The monuments are associated with an ancient cultural tradition, although their precise historical context is not fully understood.
Historical Significance
Why it matters: Tiya demonstrates that Ethiopia’s architectural heritage extends far beyond castles and religious buildings. Monumental stone traditions preserve evidence of earlier communities, burial customs, artistic expression, and collective memory.
